Whether you’re hosting or just attending BBQ’s this summer, it can be easy to feel like you can’t enjoy the party and stick to your healthy eating habits at the same time. But no worries—there are plenty of ways to do just that – and probably encourage others that want to do the same but didn’t know how!

Here are 6 easy tips to make your BBQ healthier and more enjoyable:

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

Skip the sugary drinks and stick with water to keep yourself hydrated. Pro tip: set a water goal for the day and keep your water bottle with you so you remember to drink throughout the event. Staying hydrated will help keep hunger at bay and keep you feeling good all day long!

2. Set a Limit on Alcohol

It’s easy to get carried away with cocktails, but setting a limit for yourself can help you stay on track. Try putting a coin or paperclip in your pocket each time you have a drink—this way, you can easily keep track of how many you’ve had and know when it’s time to switch to water.

3. Move Your Body Before the BBQ

Try to get in some movement before the party starts! A quick walk or workout will get you feeling good and set you up for healthier choices throughout the day. Plus, it feels great to get active before you dive into all that delicious food and drinks.

4. Go for Salad Instead of Pasta

Heavy pasta salads are common at BBQs, but you can make a more balanced plate by loading up on salad and saving your carb choices for fruit or buns. If the pasta or potato salads are what you enjoy most, then look for ways to increase the veggies in them or choose it as your carb and skip the bun for your burger or bbq sandwich.

5. Pick Lean Proteins

When you’re at the grill, go for leaner meats like chicken, sirloin, filet, or seafood. These proteins are filling and satisfying but won’t add sneaky calories from saturated fat like a more marbled cut of meat does. You’ll get all the protein you need without going overboard on calories unintentionally.

6. Fill Up on Veggies First

Grilled veggies are a must at any BBQ. Go for the colorful options—bell peppers, zucchini, mushrooms, and red onions. Not only are they delicious, but they’re also nutrient-packed and low in calories. Fill your plate with these first to get the good stuff in before reaching for the heavier options.
