At the time that I am writing this, the economy is booming, inflation is rising, and people are coming us with new ways to invest their resources. Everyone is looking for a great Return on Investment, or ROI. Real estate, the stock market, crypto… everyone wants to put their resources somewhere and make some profit.
But have you ever considered that your health is the one resource that you cannot neglect?
Being healthy is something everyone wants, yet not many people take the time to invest in it. No one wants to work out or focus on eating healthier because there is a perception that these things are hard, or more likely, not as fun as the other options with your time. People are more concerned with making money and pursuing otherworldly goals at the expense of their lives. The truth is, when we don’t take care of ourselves, we’re hurting our quality of life and those around us who love us dearly.
Investing is what we do when we want to grow our income. But other investments can make us wealthier than money too! One of those investments is taking care of ourselves so that we have the energy to take on life’s many challenges each day–and this includes getting enough sleep. Another investment might be learning how to manage stress better or practicing gratitude every single day. When we do things like eating well, exercising regularly, hanging out with people who support us, and spending quality time with loved ones, we are gaining tremendous ROI.
Sometimes we forget that investing time into ourselves is essential for making us better people at work or home. I can’t tell you how many of our members who have committed to their health come back and tell me how much better they feel, and how they can now chase their kids around without feeling tired.
Let me also tell you about Dave. Dave was one of my clients from when I first started as a personal trainer. Dave came in with a goal of losing 40 lbs. Dave had gained the weight when he took on a new job that he didn’t love, but it paid well, and in the midst of it, he lost his focus on his health. He developed pre-diabetes, as well as he had lost the desire to produce at work, even saying he’d rather quit his mid-level executive job and go work at Chick-Fil-a so he could eat waffle fries every day and not have so much stress.
After Dave lost the 40 lbs he came in to lose in 5 months, a couple of crazy changes occurred. First, Dave went to his doctor for his next check-up, where the doctor was supposed to be putting him on blood pressure and diabetes meds. When the doctor ran his numbers, he proudly told Dave that he didn’t need medication because his numbers were perfect.
Secondly, Dave was motivated again at work. He had produced some incredible results for his company that allowed him to walk into his boss and ask for a $40,000 a year raise, and he got it.
Many others like Dave have found that a focus on their health yielded results across many areas in their lives.
In order to do this, you must first figure out what is necessary and then commit those hours into that area of focus. The second step is awareness of your energy levels during the day, so you know when it’s best to tackle specific tasks or projects versus others. A third way might be getting rid of distractions from your life- things like social media and TV. These items steal our attention away from what we need done and keep us feeling tired and frustrated with ourselves! With a little more insight on how to invest your time, you can have the opportunity for success.
What are some ways we can recharge our batteries? Maybe it means taking a midday walk outside on a lovely day, perhaps it means getting out of town now and then with friends or family, or maybe it just means switching up your routine by trying something new, like cooking more often! Whatever way works best for you, make sure to give yourself the space to enjoy what makes you happy (and healthy).
The time you put into your health will pay off in dividends. You may not be able to see the benefits of good nutrition, exercise, and sleep right away, but over time these habits can make a huge difference in how well you feel both physically and mentally.
Keep in mind that good health is the best investment anyone can make.
