One of the easiest ways to stay on top of your hydration is to set a specific water intake goal. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least 8 cups (64 ounces) of water per day. We recommend our athletes aim for 1/2 of their body weight in oz of water daily. If you’re working out, or it’s especially hot outside, your body will need extra water to stay hydrated.

To make tracking your water intake easy, see how many oz are in your favorite cup or water bottle and calculate how many of those you need to drink in a day to hit your goal. Then simply divide that in 2 and aim to hit half of your goal before lunch and the other half before dinner.

Tip #2: Infuse Your Water with Flavor

If you find plain water boring, try infusing it with flavors. Adding a few slices of lemon, lime, cucumber, or mint leaves can make water taste more refreshing or interesting leading you to drink more.

Some people like to use calorie free flavorings like Crystal Light or electrolyte packets like Liquid IV or Propel to help them hit their goals. If you like bubbles, there are many fizzy options available both with and without flavorings or artificial sweeteners. While we know plain water is best, but if flavorings help you hit your hydration goals more consistently then the benefits outweigh the risks.

Tip #3: Drink Water Before and After Meals

Another simple trick to boost hydration is to make water a part of your meals. Try drinking a glass of water before each meal as a way to stack a new habit on an already established habit. It can also aid in digestion, helping break down food and absorb nutrients more effectively.

Additionally, drinking water after meals helps your body process the food and flush out any waste products. It’s a simple habit that will help ensure you stay hydrated throughout the day without even thinking about it.

Bonus Tip: Carry Water Everywhere You Go

The more accessible your water is, the more likely you are to drink it. Keep a reusable water bottle with you wherever you go, whether you’re at work, running errands, or working out. Having it on hand will remind you to take sips throughout the day, making it easier to meet your hydration goals.
